texas

Apr. 22nd, 2008 | 11:13 pm

a few years, i had the opportunity of spending a few weeks in Houston as I was figuring out the next step in my life after college graduation. on this upcoming friday, i'll have the opportunity to return to texas for a few days, but only this time, i've have already figured out that step of my life that i was trying to figure out years ago.

i'm not really quite sure what to expect this time around, however, i am now more settled and older, i won't be at the cowboy bar drinking 95 cent crown and cokes while being the token asian guy on on the dance floor thinking that i was a good line dancer. then there's the super target that I went to for food at night while grabbing a sonics burger and shake on the way back the university of houston. not to mention walking through rice village and having my last meal at the mexican restaurant inside the Galleria mall with friends that i met in the course of a few weeks. then there was the time that i fell asleep on the city bus and ended up in a neighborhood that had barbed wire fencing on houses that looked as sturdy as the storage shack in my parent's backyard. did i also mention that i was stopped by private security in another neighborhood that was all composed of white mansions? and the chinese restaurant that i walked into next to the walgreens in the GHETTO, and got spicy chicken wings dipped in red hot with some fried rice that resembled something similar to jambalaya.

for the next couple of days, i'll be able to relive a part of my past, except this time, i will already have walked the next step that I was trying to figure out at the time and will have trang by my side, which was missing on the previous occasion. with that being said, "hello texas, again......."

I-5 Closed

Dec. 3rd, 2007 | 10:05 pm

I-5 in Chehalis Closed Due to Flooding; WSDOT Crews Clearing Roads as Wild Weather Continues

Date: Monday, December 03, 2007

Contact: Contacts: Melanie Coon, WSDOT Communications, (360) 507-4242 (Olympia)
Sylvia Ross, WSDOT Communications (360) 759-1336 (Vancouver)

last updated 6:30 pm, Dec. 3

OLYMPIA – Flooding on I-5 in Chehalis has forced WSDOT to close the freeway to all traffic and forecasted high winds have floating bridge crews on high alert.

I-5 will be closed from exit 88 near Grand Mound (approximately 20 miles south of Olympia) to exit 68 (11 miles south of Chehalis) due to flooding. The freeway will remain closed for at least 36 hours and likely longer while crews wait for the Chehalis River (at milepost 77-79) and Dillenbaugh Creek (at milepost 74) to recede. This is the first complete freeway closure due to flooding in this area since 1996.

Avoid Seattle-Portland highway travel if possible:

* If possible, avoid Seattle-Portland highway travel until floods recede. Rivers and streams continue to rise and additional highway and mountain pass closures are expected. If you must go, stay on the interstates. Note that the interstate detour route is 440 miles, takes at least seven hours during good weather and traffic conditions and is vulnerable to winter closures near Snoqualmie Pass.
* From the Portland area: West on Oregon’s I-84 then north on I-82 to The Tri-Cities and Ellensburg and then west on I-90 to Seattle.
* From the Seattle area: East on I-90 to Yakima and then south on I-82 at Ellensburg to The Tri-Cities then west on Oregon’s I-84 to Portland.
* US 12, US 97 and State Route 7 reserved for local traffic only. US 12 may close overnight due to flooding. US 97 is currently open to traffic though there is water over the roadway.
* Commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs. GVW are not allowed on State Route 7, from US 12 between Tacoma and Morton.

Downed trees and power lines along with mudslides and standing water have blocked lanes on several highways and isolated some communities in Pacific Coastal Areas and the Olympic Peninsula. Snow and slides have forced highway closures on I-90 and U.S. 2 in the Cascade mountains. Continued heavy traffic is expected in the greater Seattle area tonight, particularly if the SR 520 Evergreen Point Floating Bridge must be closed to traffic due to high winds. WSDOT crews have been working steadily, responding to problems to keep roadways safe for drivers and emergency workers.

“Governor Gregoire has already declared a State of Emergency and this storm isn’t over yet,” said Secretary of Transportation Paula Hammond. “Melting snow and rising rivers will likely bring floods and force additional highway closures in the next few days. Drivers need to plan ahead and exercise caution, particularly when they see water on a roadway or crews working to clear a road.”

Concerns for later today include more rain combined with high winds and a melting snow pack. Motorists should anticipate delays or closures through tomorrow. Weather and traffic conditions are changing rapidly. For the most up-to-the-minute highway status, visit http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/Update/I5-Closure-milepost-68-88.htm and www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic. If you’re on the road, have a passenger call 5-1-1 to get timely updates. The storm could also affect Washington State Ferry schedules.

WSDOT crews continue to work at all hours to help keep drivers safe and roads open. They are working with local law enforcement and utility companies to remove power lines and debris from the roadway. Many crews must suspend work at night because daylight is needed to accurately assess dangerous conditions and conduct repair work safely. WSDOT emergency operations centers in Western Washington have been activated.

What can drivers do?

* Get the most up-to-date information from the WSDOT Web site (www.wsdot.wa.gov), the 511 phone line and local news media.
* Assess the weather situation before setting out.
* Do not attempt to drive through standing water on closed roadways.
* Take it slow.
* Read the overhead electronic signs and listen to WSDOT Highway Advisory Radio when you are on the road.

6 month point....

Jun. 4th, 2007 | 01:02 am
music: T-Pain - 69

so June 1st, 2007 marked the six month point of my employment with KC. it also marks the end of my probation period. last thursday, my supervisor called me into his office and we had my review, actually he had already typed it out and just asked me to sign it. he said to look it over but didn't think i would have any objections to it. he was right, no objections, so i signed on the dotted line and with that signature, i'm now a permanent employee.

looking back at the past six months, it's been one heck of a ride, graduating college again, starting a new job, and working out intensely. i'm much healthier now than anything during the past 5 years, being almost 20 pounds lighter, and having much more energy. so i've booked my summer trip last week, a one week alaska cruise for september. tricia graduates from high school on June 18th at 7:00pm.

here's to a good start to the summer to everyone! life is good! :)

the little things in life...

May. 3rd, 2007 | 11:45 pm
location: lynnwood, wa

where: tullys
when: 8:45am today
what: sometimes things happen during some of the most hectic times of your life. like this morning, while rushing to a meeting, my mind was flustered, focused on my presentation, charts in hand, excel spreadsheets analyzed, so i decided to step out of the office before the meeting to get a cup of coffee. all of a sudden while waiting in line, something happened that makes you realize there are many things much more valuable in life than work. so here's to a perfect stranger, although I didn't get your name, I do appreciate you noticing..... if I ever run into you again, it's my treat!

by the way, the meeting went very good! time for bed, tomorrow is another day!

every year about this time, I start the process of planning out this summer, weekends out of town, trips, resolutions, and things i want to purchase. so far here is my list for this year....

things to buy:
new car
summer clothes

12-14' aluminum fishing boat

resolutions:

continue eating more veggies, less salt, less sugar, and no alcohol (been hard, especially when you have an open bar in the house)
catching up with old friends
continue meeting with my weight watchers coach

making amends with certain people

we'll see how far when I look back at this list towards the end of Summer...
